What I Learned From 23

December 1, 2017

Today I turn 24.

23 was a big year filled with lots of new and exciting changes.

Here is what I took away from the year, in retrospect.

1. You don’t owe anyone your time or energy.

If you don’t want to be somewhere or do something, you don’t have to do it. End of story.

2. Comparison is the root of all evil.

The people who surround you are brilliant and wonderful, but guess what? So are you!

3. Invest in whatever makes you happy.

Good breakfast, skincare, makeup, journals, etc. There is nothing wrong with getting the things that make you feel good, just keep it under control.

4. Reading will never go out of style.

Tablet, paperback, hardcover, cave wall. Whatever it is, read. Continuing to expand as a person did not hurt anyone, and can result in some great epiphanies.

5. Throw kindness around like glitter AND confetti.

It will be really hard to ignore when it’s so shiny and everywhere, and will take months to go away. I have never heard of a person being too kind.

6. Go for it!

Move to that city. Send that email. Go to that audition. If you don’t put yourself out there and make yourself uncomfortable, you will never know what could have happened.

7. It won’t always be easy.

Obstacles will be everywhere. Hoops set on fire, taunting you just to see if you’ll attempt to jump through them. You might make it through the hoop and subsequently set yourself on fire, but take a couple burns and bruises over never trying.

8. Solitude is vital and necessary.

Spending time with yourself, whether it is reading, journaling, blogging, or watching a movie, is important. Recognizing when you to pull back and recharge will keep you honest with yourself and those around you.

9. Never stop communicating.

I cannot read minds, and unless I have been told otherwise, the people in my life cannot either. TALK. If there is something you want to share or get off your chest, tell someone about it. Holding emotions and feelings in will result in backlog and when it all comes bubbling up, it won’t be pretty.

10. Get rid of what does not serve you.

Don’t stick around with people who don’t make you feel your best. Don’t keep clothes you hate wearing just because of the name or the compliments. If it’s not serving you, let it go.
