Starting in January, I followed the Whole30 meal plan. The “long story short” concept is removing food groups from your diet that can be inflammatory. Let me premise this by saying that this does not mean that there are “good” foods and “bad” foods, simply ones that may work with your body or against it. This was the main reason I followed this plan; I needed to see if I could address some issues I had been having. So with the month of January to myself with Artur home in Brazil, I went full out Whole30!
I felt so good after one round, I jumped right into a second round as I entered “Finding Nemo” rehearsals and Artur came home. It was a great way to see how I could remain Whole30 while busy and with a significant other in the house who was not completely Whole30 compliant.
The results of those two rounds included things like clearer skin, no brain fog, and improved well-being. The program suggests no measuring or weighing over the course of the 30 days, but suggest process photos to be taken. I didn’t really follow through on that as I wanted to make it as clear to myself that feeling better was the goal, not reaching a number or size.
Even now with almost 6 months having passed, Whole30 is a part of my life. I am not always Whole30 compliant, but I exercise Food Freedom, which Whole30 creator Melissa Hartwig defines as: feeling in control of the food that you eat, instead of food controlling you.
As I head into my third round of Whole30 this month, I want to share with you the foods and products that have made my Whole30 great so that you may have the same experience!
If you are always waiting for the “right time” to start something, it will never happen. Go for it!
Keep in mind: Not everything from these companies will be compliant. Read your labels. It is up to YOU to read and re-read the ingredients in each of these to make sure they apply.

1. Frank’s Hot Sauce
Frank’s is one of my favorites, giving a good amount of heat and can be added to meat and veggies. There are many hot sauces out there that are compliant, just be sure to read the labels to make sure they haven’t sneaked some sugar in there or have additives that will not benefit you while on Whole30. Often times, the Buffalo and Chipotle flavors are the non-compliant culprits.
2. Primal Kitchen Ranch
Some days, you just want to have some ranch with a meal! There are recipes to make your own in the Whole30 book which are wonderful, but for a quick fix, Primal Kitchen has one of the best clean ranches. Carrying other Whole30 compliant products like mayo, collagen peptides, and avocado oil.
3. Fourth & Heart Ghee
Ghee is clarified butter often used in South Asian cooking. It has grown in popularity in many circles as it allows for the taste of butter without the dairy and lactose. I use Fourth & Heart Madagascar Vanilla Ghee in my Bulletproof Coffee. The ghee adds a slight sweetness while also creating a creamy consistency. Along with this “sweet” ghee, there are also savory flavors such as Pink Himalayan Salt and California Garlic, which are perfect for cooking veggies or meats.
4. EPIC Bar
Many of the products created by Epic are perfect for when you’re on the go and in a pinch for protein. Read more about their philosophy online, but through the ethical and fair treatment of these animals, they are taking a strong stance on how we can make a difference in this world of modern agriculture.
So many jerkies and meat sticks on the market are filled with preservatives and fake flavoring that give me heartburn, but Epic hits the spot. Their Turkey Almond Cranberry and Beef Apple Bacon are two of my favorites.
5. Lara Bar
I tend to save Lara Bars for a true "in a pinch" need. Melissa Hartwig explains that your brain cannot differentiate between a candy bar and Lara Bar; it only senses the sugar. Using Lara Bars as ways to get a bump of fat and natural sugar from the dates is ok, but don’t use it as a dessert replacement.
7. So Delicious Cashew Almond Milk
A goal I have is to start making my own nut milks, but for the time being, this has become one of my favorites! Using it in coffee or pairing it with some blueberries and chia seeds for a snack, I love the combination of almond and the cashew.
8. Good Foods Guacamole
I was not a big fan of avocados or guacamole until I started the Whole30, but that has changed. Full of good fat and flavor, guacamole is a great food to keep yourself full between meals. With the right amount of onion, tomato, and seasonings, this pairs well with eggs for breakfast and compliant taco bowls for dinner.
I hope this is a reminder that just because you are doing Whole30 doesn’t mean you have to suffer. There are so many options out there now to enhance your meals!
