10 Tips to Have a Successful First Whole30

Are you interested in completing a Whole30 but are unsure where to start? I have compiled my best advice and tips that I believe can help relieve suspicions and worries.

1. BUY the book, buy the book, buy the book. Did I mention to buy the book? I understand you can find the rules online along with recipes on Pinterest. But having the full breakdown of the program from creator Melissa Hartwig, recipes, and the book itself as a resource simply exceed what you’ll find online.

2. Journaling is super helpful in understanding what is working, what isn’t, and how to improve. Melissa Hartwig developed a Day by Day Journal that I loved using as it took all the guessing out of what to reflect on.

3. Going to a store like Costco or Sam’s Club can allow you to get larger amounts of approved foods while also saving money in the long run. I pick up quality meats, frozen veggies, and eggs among other foods at my local Costco. Remember that what these stores carry will vary depending on where you live.

4. Have a routine. It can be as simple as quiet time in the morning with your coffee and journaling at night before bed. This can help you get through the toughest days.

5. Don’t expect everyone to understand why you’re doing this, it only matters that YOU understand why you’re doing it!

6. With that said, if you have a significant other who is not participating, communicate with them to make sure that you both understand the needs of each other to feel supported. For myself, my husband and I have breakfast and lunch on our own, but dinner is always Whole30 compliant.

7. Keeping active and filling your day helps you focus less on the foods you think you need or miss. Whether it is a walk, a workout class, or even reading a book, utilize each day as best as possible.

8. Don’t miss out on social events or gatherings for fear that you will “fail” your Whole30. Plan accordingly by researching the restaurant’s menu or talking to the friends hosting the gathering to make sure you will be fed and never apologize for asking for what you need in either instance.

9. Find the compliant foods you like and don’t focus on the ones you don’t. Do your best to have variety in what you’re eating so you don’t get bored, but as long as you met the requirements of the program, that’s what matters, not how fancy you get.

10. Recognize ALL your non-scale victories, and stay OFF the scale, which is already a Whole30 rule. We get so caught up in so much else on a health journey that we often forget success can occur in ways OTHER than weight loss. Is your skin clearer or brighter? Do you have more wiggle room in your favorite jeans? Are you sleeping better at night? These results can often out weigh, for a lack of better words, weight loss alone.
