My Fitness Journey
Finding what works for YOU is what’s most important at the end of the day, so I want to premise this by saying I am not here to discredit any program or person, I simply want to talk through what I have done in the past and what has worked for me.
My health and fitness journey started earlier than most. I began addressing eating habits when I was about 12, using a meal program that helped break down portion control and introduce healthier options, while still enjoying good foods. Growing up, I was always active with dance, gym at school, and working out in college.
In the last few years, I have taken a couple approaches to my health and fitness. I have done the going to the gym and trying to figure out what to do on my own, as well as participating in workout programs and following the meal plans accompanying them.
Take a look and see if something sparks your interest.
This was my first introduction to a fitness program. It’s a 30-day program where one workout is repeated for 10 days before moving onto the next workout until 30 days have been completed. Unfortunately, I get bored really fast, and I don’t think I ever finished this program considering it was only 3 workouts to be cycled through. By day 3 of each round, I was bored and my muscles wanted something different. If you like repetition and seeing how you can improve doing the same workout for a number of days, this could be right for you.
After I finished my first cruise contract, I decided to kick it up a notch with my health and fitness. I had been following multiple people who were loving on this company, so I decided to give it a shot. I completed a couple programs and did many workouts while on my next ship; I even gave coaching a shot. Having a multitude of programs paired with meal plans is a large draw to this company, and I think it can be a great way to get into health and fitness, especially if you're unsure where to start, like I was. I still tap into workouts at times, and a lot of the portion control and meal concepts have stuck with me. I don't think the timing wasn’t right to be a coach, and I know I have considered it at times, but I think if I am going to coach, I will do it more on my own terms.
Kayla Itsines BBG
Kayla Itsines has a large following on Instagram and before I tried her program, I watched her workouts from a distance. A large part of what kept me from trying the workouts was a lack of workout equipment, as her Bikini Body Guide (BBG) uses weights and other workout apparatuses. Luckily, getting on a ship eased the access to this equipment. I did this program to completion while on the Adventure of Seas. I felt great about completing it, but as anyone who has worked on a cruise ship, there are only so many healthy options when it comes to staff mess food. I would like to try the program again with more access and control with healthy foods. Maybe in the future I’ll try the program out again, but for now, this isn’t the one I really connect with.
Love Sweat Fitness by Katie Dunlop
Enter the program and challenges that I have been using for the last six months. I started with Love Sweat Fitness (LSF) in July by completing the Summer Shape Up Challenge. Katie has two fitness guides along with a meal plan and recipe book. If you’re unable to purchase any of those, there are free challenges which range 3-8 weeks, as well as LSF Daily 10 workouts posted on Katie’s website. The Daily 10s are meant to be 10 minutes workouts that can be done anywhere. The beauty of these programs and challenges is that you can do them anywhere and you don’t need any machines to be successful. I have purchased resistance loops to intensify the workouts, but knowing I can use my own body weight and I don’t have to leave my house makes it easier to get exercise in.
On top of everything else, I have found a beautiful and supportive community of women. It can be a lot to put yourself first, especially in regards to health and wellness, so to have found a group I can confide in is so refreshing.
If you have been searching for a program that gets you back in the workout ring, give one of these a try. If there is a different fitness program you have fallen in love with and want to share, comment below so I can check and try them out.
